Chorus Adds 3rd Show

Portland, Oregon----------February 25, 2010
The Portland Gay Men's Chorus has added a 3rd show to their highly anticipated retro-pop-rock spectacle, ABBAQueen.  The Chorus will now open the weekend run on Friday, March 19th at 8pm.  The Saturday show is sold out.

Honestly, who better to perform the music of ABBA and Queen than the Portland Gay Men's Chorus? PGMC's 130 voices will be rocking and grooving to all the hits including Mamma Mia, We are the Champions, Take a Chance on Me, Somebody to Love, Fernando, Bohemian Rhapsody, and of course, Dancing Queen.

In honor of Queen's Freddie Mercury, who once said, "I dress to kill, but tastefully," a costume contest will be part of the experience.  Audience members are encouraged to dress in their most outrageous 70's threads and strut across our stage for a chance to win a prize and be named PGMC's Dancing Queen or Killer Queen.

Celebrating 30 years of Opening Hearts and Minds!!!- Free Event at Pioneer Square

I am pleased to announce that the kickoff to PGMC’s 30th Season of “Opening Hearts & Minds” in Portland’s Living Room – Pioneer Courthouse Square - is on track and heading toward a big debut!

On Saturday, October 3rd  the Chorus is hosting it’s first LGBT Information Fair on the Square from 1pm to 5pm to thank our loyal audience,  promote the chorus and practice our mission of outreach in the local community.

The fair is one week before National Coming Out Day and is intended to highlight non-profit activities that people might want to consider joining if they are:

-          considering coming out,

-          newly out,

-          new to town, or

-          looking to expand their horizons.

So far, we have ten (10) information theme tents funded by various sponsors,  and we hope to have an additional six (6) information theme tents which have not yet been financially sponsored.

Without sponsorship, we will not be able to include these themes in the fair...so your help would be greatly appreciated.  Sponsors will have their name on a banner above the tent and will build goodwill with the sponsored organizations, the attendees and the chorus.  They will not be able to have representatives on hand promoting their products or services.

If you know of any people or organizations that might like to be a sponsor of one of these themes, please put me in contact with them as soon as possible.   The Athletic Activities tent is the largest, at $675 for sponsorship.  The remainder can be sponsored for $355.

The yet-to-be-funded themes are:

Athletic Activities  (Adventure Group, Amazon Dragons Paddling Group, PDX Pride Bowling, Portland Gay & Lesbian Bowling Association, Portland Gay Tennis, Portland Gay Volleyball, Avalanche Rugby Football Club, Net Rippers Soccer, Rose City Gay Softball, Portland Front Runners, Rose City Softball Association, Rosetown Ramblers, Ruby Red Flippers, Team Oregon 2010, Out Dancing, Portland Gay Basketball, Portland's Gay & Lesbian Out Kayaking Club, Gay Skate)

Portland Gay Mens chorus receives $20,000 grant

PGMC Flash News For Immediate Release PGMC Receives $20,000 Grant Portland, Oregon----------August 27, 2009 The Portland Gay Men's Chorus is pleased to announce that we are the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund.  PGMC is one of the nation's oldest gay-identified choruses and has been active in the Portland community for almost 30 years.  The Chorus' artistic director, Bob Mensel says this couldn't have come at a better time.  "PGMC has strived to examine every penny we spend and make judicial cuts when possible.  Still there are some areas, especially in regard to our artistic vision and outreach programs, where we definitely feel the pinch of the economic downturn. This support by Spirit Mountain Community Fund allows us to envision the future upon a wider artistic canvas as well as maintain, and hopefully expand, our outreach."   "The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde through the Spirit Mountain Community Fund invests in programs and services that promote self-sufficiency and inclusively. The Portland Gay Men's Chorus is a shining example of a local agency that promotes diversity and understanding. It is an honor to promote the values of this outstanding organization," said Director Shelley Hanson. Spirit Mountain Community Fund donates about $4 million each year to local programs and services that benefit citizens striving for self-sufficiency.   This is the second grant the Chorus has received from the Community Fund. The Portland Gay Men's Chorus thanks the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde for their ongoing support. Susannah Mars, prominent star of Portland's theater and cabaret scene, will be our special guest as we romp through some of the greatest musical moments from Broadway. Favorites from Rent,West Side Story, A Chorus Line, My Fair Lady, and the Music Man are just a few of the hugely popular and foot-stomping numbers Susannah and the chorus will perform. The Oregonian says, "When Susannah Mars sings, the world stops." We agree! So don't miss this earth-stopping songfest of musical delights when PGMC meets Mars on Broadway.
